How To Say “The Price Is Wrong” In Dutch

The price is wrong. Translation? De prijs klopt niet. You have just learned how to say that the price is wrong in Dutch. Wrong! I would say that you have just learned how to write, “De prijs klopt niet.” instead. Since I am not providing audio for pronunciation yet.

Dutch

Let me tell you a story. Last year, I went to the supermarket. I bought six pieces of cake. I had seen the correct price on the shelf. It was €0,75 per piece. I was mistakenly overcharged at the supermarket counter. I paid €1,39 per piece instead. 

Price

I paid €0,64 more per piece. Times six cakes. I paid €8,34 in total. Instead of €4,50 in total. I was overcharged €3.84 more in total. I got home. I looked at the shopping receipt. I was surprised but not shocked. I went shopping the following week.

Negation

The same supermarket. I took all the six cakes with me. I went back to the supermarket counter. It was early in the morning. The time was 08:15 CET. There were very few people in the supermarket.  It was not busy. I greeted the cashier. 

Greeting

Good morning, madam. Goedemorgen, mevrouw. In Dutch, of course. Good morning, sir. Goedemorgen ,meneer. She replied with a smile and asked what she could do for me. Wat kan ik voor u doen? I asked her to check the price of the cakes for me again.

Question

Kunt u de prijs voor mij checken, alstublieft? I told her that the price was wrong. De prijs klopt niet. She took one of the cakes and the receipt. She checked and called one of her colleagues. She told him to look at the price on the shelf for her. 

Bake

He asked me to show him the product. I pulled one of the cakes from my bag. I showed it to him. He then asked me if the cake was a sliced cake. I answered yes, it was a sliced cake. Ja, de gesneden. He walked into the cake section.

Translation

I was standing outside the counter. I did not enter the supermarket. He reappeared in less than a minute. €0,75 per piece. He said to me politely. He walked closer to the cashier.. €0,75 per piece! He playfully yelled the price at her. 

Gratefulness

She looked at him, smiled and nodded her head. She calculated the difference. Opened the money box. Gave me the difference. I was very excited. Grateful and lucky. I got some of my money back. Yes, I know. It is not a lot of money.

Understanding

The difference of €3.84. I took it plus the old and new receipts. I thanked her for her service. I placed my bag outside. I walked into the supermarket. I started shopping for essentials. De prijs van de taart klopt niet. Translation? The price of the cake is wrong.
